弥勒本缘
《弥勒上生经》曰:“佛告优婆离:弥勒先于波罗捺国劫波利村波婆利大婆罗门生,劫后十二年二月十五日,还家本生处结跏趺坐,如入灭定。身紫金色光明艳赫如百千日,上至兜率陀天。”
《一切智光明仙人慈心因缘不食肉经》曰:“佛住摩伽提国寂灭道场弥伽女村自在天祠精舍,时有迦波利婆罗门子名弥勒,躯体金色,三十二相八十种好。”[3]
弥勒出世
弥勒为贤劫千佛之第五佛。自今经五十六亿七千万年出世于第十之灭劫。继绍释迦佛。于龙华树下以三会之说法,化了一切之人天也。

时时示时人,时人自不识"。江浙间多以契此是弥勒"分身"示现,故多图画其形象。早的一例是宋代崇宁三年(公元1104年)岳林寺为他建阁塑像。明清寺院则将此种大肚弥勒佛置于天王殿***,以笑迎四面八方的信徒。杭州灵隐寺飞来峰雕刻的布袋弥勒佛,高约2公尺,约作于元代。福建省福清市海口镇石刻布袋弥勒佛,高6.4公尺,宽8.9公尺,创作于元末明初

出身于南天竺婆罗门家庭,是释迦牟尼的弟子,常修行菩萨道,现住兜率天兜率内院修行、说法,等待将来到人间。弥勒的梵文Maitreya是一个很常见的婆罗门姓氏,字根源自梵文的Maitrī,意为慈爱。玄奘到印度求学时,直译梵文Maitreya为梅呾利耶。
在,弥勒的传说起源甚早,很可能在次结集后、第二次结集前就已经出现,说一切有部将他编入《中阿含经》,分别说部将他编入《长阿含经》。弥勒是释尊时代一位来自南方的青年门徒,这是各个部派皆认可的事实。在南传小部经〈波罗延品〉中,帝须弥勒(Tissa-metteyya)与阿耆多(Ajita,又译为阿逸多)是佛陀的两位弟子,汉译《杂阿含经》中相同。《中阿含经》说他们两位,一位发愿,一位发愿成转轮圣王。
