Electronics
Amplifier power, electronic crossovers, phase alignment, equalization, time correction and speaker protection are integrated into the EX10’s amplifier module. On-board electronics ensure fast, easy set up and complete control.
An improved version of KV2 Audio’s Switch Mode, current enhancing low frequency amplifier has been developed for the EX10. The new configuration improves overall system efficiency and increases output allowing passive radiation of heat to take place through a unique “fin-less” heat sink that can be placed in any position or direction. This ensures cool operation in horizontal or vertical applicati***.
Additionally, the EX10 amplifier unit contains an internally located electric fan that is operated by a temperature sensing circuit which will slowly bring the fan online as required in extreme, high temperature situati***.
Months of research were invested into designing circuitry to ensure that the EX10’s extreme dynamic range is maintained even under clipping conditi***. The real test of the EX10’s limits is when it is exposed to the rigors and demands of live audio playback where clipping of amplifiers, generation of distortion artifacts and dramatic increases in the noise floor are all par for the course.
Acoustic Components
The EX10’s high frequency compression driver is tightly controlled by KV2 Audio’s standard low intermodulation distortion, Class A/B, push-pull, high and mid frequency amplifier design. Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET) are used for the output stage; the compression driver is coupled through a transformer balanced speaker output. The entire performance strategy for this type of design is based on producing the lowest intermodulation distortion possible and the highest audio quality in the critical mid and high operating bands.
A new woofer technology was developed in conjunction with the engineering team at KV2 Audio’s transducer partner, 18 Sound in C***riago, Italy. The technology is called Active Impedance Control (AIC) and it delivers several exciting performance advantages. AIC technology c***ists of a carefully designed and placed “additional” coil placed on the speakers’s magnetic pole piece and connected in parallel to the primary voice coil. The magnetic field generated by this additional coil has the following effects:
1) Complete linearization of speaker impedance
2) Linearization of the acoustic and electrical phase resp***e
3) Delivery of a significant increase in sensitivity and total SPL output
4) A remarkable reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)
5) Increased power transfer and transducer speed
All of these benefits help minimize several weaknesses inherit in two-way loudspeaker systems such as poor quality low-mids and weak transient resp***e found in this band pass. The EX10 is transparent, up-front and seamless in comparison to any and all competitive active 10-inch 2-way designs.
The compression driver is a new, patent pending 1.75-inch titanium diaphragm design, featuring a complex geometry phase plug that dramatically lowers distortion, eliminates ring modes and provides clearer, ripple free performance.
The EX10 horn design was designed with two primary design goals. First to be as ***ooth as possible within its operating bandwidth and second to display perfect power resp***e characteristics vis-à-vis the 10-inch woofer it is designed to crossover with.
The mechanical design allows the horn to be rotated 90 degrees, allowing for complete flexibility in selection of vertical and horizontal system set up. The horn design is based on c***tant- directivity geometry with an emphasis on generating very low air distortion artifacts, maintaining low transducer compression ratios, high output and wide dispersion (100 x 80). The horn is an injected molded aluminum part that functi*** as a heat dissipator for the compression driver’s neodymium magnetic motor structure.
Enclosure Design
The EX10 is a very compact, asymmetrical geometry enclosure design allowing it to be used in a variety of applicati*** and featuring a number of ergonomically designed components that make it lightweight and easy to use. An extensive set of professional ha***are features enables the EX10 to be used in a variety of environments using an array of industry standard ha***are. These facilitate both portable and fixed installati*** with a maximum amount of mounting flexibility.
A specially molded aluminum top handle was designed and fitted to the top of the cabinet. It functi*** as the principle pick up handle as well as providing several fixed installation and hanging soluti***. It has a centrally located M10 hang point as well as four additional M6 bracket points. The handles four principal mounting bolts also provide an OmnimountTM bracket point. There are two side-mounted M10 hang points that can be used with brackets or eyebolts.
There are four industry standard, steel “fly-clip” points. Two on top and two located on the bottom of the cabinet. A side recessed, slot handle provides a stabilization point as the cabinet is pole mounted. (The EX10 is also ***ailable without these two features for applicati*** where flying is not required)
Accessories
EX2.2 Active Bass Module
The EX10 can be combined with an EX2.2 Active Bass Module in order to create a formidable, very high output audio system. The EX2.2 is comprised of two 12-inch woofers and features on-board amplification and control electronics with 1000 watts of total power.
EX10-HBRACKET
A horizontal U-bracket designed for use with the two side-mounted M10 hang points.
EX10-VBRACKET
A vertical U-bracket designed for use with the top handle located M10 hang point. The kit includes a special mounting plate with integral M10 attachment point that replaces the lower top hat assembly.
EX10-WBX 60.0
A black OmnimountTM bracket attaches to the top of the cabinet and allows the cabinet to be vertically mounted.
