BS 6853:1999 Annex D (as referred to in BS 6853:1999 Code of practice for fire precauti*** in the design and c***truction of passenger carrying trains) details a test method and procedure to be used for the measurement of ***oke density of the products of combustion of materials. The test method is utilised for the ***oke classification of all products utilised on board the train and forms an integral part of all the classification tables (Tables 1 to 14), as referred to in BS 6853:1999. It is also called upon by the London Underground specification CAT 1 Number 2-01001-002, Issue A1 December 2003, formally referred to as E1042 A6).
The test is performed inside a chamber measuring 3 metres by 3 metres by 3 metres and the test is sometimes referred to as the three metre cube test.
Depending on what the product to be tested is, there are differing arrangements inside the chamber for the test piece. Each different test type has its own reference as follows:
Annex D.8.3 – ***all scale test.
For specimens of fabric (not including seat upholstery) or specimens which weigh less than 500g (internally) or 2000g (externally) and h***e a surface area of less than 0.2m² in practice (refer to tables 7, 8 and 11 of BS 6853:1999).
Annex D.8.4 – Panel Test
For test specimens which exceed the measurements of ***all scale materials and are used as seat shell, both interior and exterior vertical surfaces and horizontal prone surfaces (refer to tables 2, 3, 5, 6 and10 of BS 6853:1999).
Annex D.8.5 – Seat Test
For specimens utilised as Seat Trim (refer to table 9 of BS 6853:1999).
Note: Tests should be performed on actual specimen seats. For development purposes, specimens of the materials and approximate c***truction may be used, and it is recommended that two simulated squab units of minimum size 400mm by 400mm and of 25mm thickness of the core ad cover composite be used suitable fitted together in an approximate seat configuration. Results from such tests cannot be regarded as more than indicative of probable performance of an actual seat.
Annex D.8.6 – Flooring Test
For specimens utilised as interior and exterior horizontal supine surfaces such as floorcoverings, table tops and mattresses (refer to tables 1, 4 and 12 of BS 6853:1999).
Annex D.8.7 – Cable Test
For specimens of cables utilised both inside and outside the vehicle (refer to tables 13 and 14 of BS 6853:1999).
